Visit one of Lisbon’s most significant landmarks – the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém, more commonly known as, Jerónimos Monastery.

Highlights

  • Discover this masterpiece of Portuguese architecture, Jerónimos Monastery, with its detailed structural cloisters, corridors, vaulted ceilings, and decorative entrance.

  • As this monastery was built as a tribute to Vasco da Gama’s successful journey to India (and to sea explorers), you’ll spot different maritime influences and creatures in the architecture.

  • Take a stroll through the garden and admire the fountain, decorated with Portuguese coats of arms.

  • Create a hassle-free itinerary with a Lisbon Card which will give you access to sites like the Belém Tower, the National Costume Museum, the National Museum of the Azulejo, and more, with free transportation.

  • Fun fact: The Virgin Mary is the patron saint of this monastery, which richly showcases the Portuguese Late Gothic ‘Manueline’ style of architecture.

Exceptional location. Incredible building with a great historical content. It is highly recommended to enter the Church and the Cloister.

The waiting line was slow, despite having already bought the tickets. In addition, neither the church of the monastery, nor most of its facilities are available for the visit. Only the central courtyard and a couple of areas are open to visitors.

It is such a nice place. So Beautiful. Made booking online while we were in the Line. West there 30 minuts before opening and was in line as number 10. The place was very nice, but was a bit disappointed that there wasn't anymore to see. Went to the church as well, and that completed a very nice stay. So overall Monastery and Church very nice. Thanks.

We had a great time exploring the monastery. We bought tickets in advance but still had to queue for about an hour in the sun. I think it's important for people to factor this in to a visit :)

A Portuguese national monument since 1907 and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983, the Jerónimos Monastery is one of the highest symbols of medieval Portuguese architecture. Historically and artistically connected to the Belém Tower, both these notable landmarks of Lisbon were built on the initiative of King Manuel I, who ruled between 1495 and 1521. The Belém Tower was built not only to protect the port of Lisbon but also for the Jerónimos Monastery.

Soak up the different elements that make up this stunning model of Manueline architectural style including Gothic, Moorish, and Renaissance styles. The two levels of cloisters are so intricate and filled with structural detail that they took a hundred years to be completed! Spot mythical creatures like gargoyles and marine animals within the carvings, columns, and arches. Don’t miss the vaulted ceilings on the lower level of the monastery or the views from the higher level of the adjacent Church of Santa Maria de Belém.
